Woodall Students Research Leap Year for Essays

Kathy Maynard, principal of Robert F. Woodall Elemenatry School challenged students to investigate the orgin of leay year, since Februrary 29, only occurs every fourth year--leap year.

Many students turned in excellent essays on the origin of leap year.  Several interesting facts were discovered by the students.

Fourth grader Madison Ragains learned there are three criteria that determine which years will be leap years.  First, every year that is divisible by four is a leap year.  Second, of those years, if it can be divided by 100, it is not a leap year unless it is divisible by 400

Fifth grader Chapel Roberts learned that it actually takes 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds for the earth to go around the sun.  Therefore, we need leap year to keep our calendar in alignment with the earth's revolution around the sun.

There were many excellent essays turned in.  Ms. Maynard had a drawing from those turned in and rewarded the winner and their class with a Happy Leap Year cake from Sunshine Bakery.

The winners were three second grade girls who worked on the project together: Lindsey Fletcher, Emmaline Abell, and Saydi Arms.

In addition the students had to find out the Woodall employee who was born on February 29th.  Students discovered that Mrs. Toni Berry is a leap year baby.  Happy Birthday, Ms. Toni.
